Dr. Jim Martincic is a native of Chicago, Illinois. He has earned the Doctor of
Musical Arts in Trumpet Performance degree from the University of
Missouri - Kansas City Conservatory of Music in 2003, where he was also
awarded a scholarship in jazz trumpet and a Chancellor’s Academic
Scholarship.
In 1997, he graduated from Illinois State University, earning the Master of
Music in Trumpet Performance and also served as the Graduate Assistant
in Jazz Studies & Music Technology during his tenure. In 1995, he
graduated from DePaul University (IL) earning the Bachelor of Music, in
Trumpet Performance while on a trumpet performance scholarship.
Currently, Dr. Martincic is an Adjunct Faculty member at Joliet Junior
College and College of DuPage. He teaches Music Literature, Music
Appreciation, Introduction to American Music, Theory, Aural Skills, Music
Fundamentals, World Music and Applied Trumpet. He also has considerable
experience substituting for Class piano, Evolution of Jazz and Introduction to
Music Technology courses. Aurora University and Moraine Valley
Community College are also among his teaching creditably.
Dr. Martincic has been teaching trumpet for over 20 years in a variety of
situations including private lessons, group band for beginner to advanced
students, sectionals for jazz band, chamber brass, wind symphony and
concert band, both at the high school and collegiate levels. He has also been
an active member for over 20 years of the International Trumpet Guild
(ITG), where he has twenty-plus CD, book, and music reviews published.
Most recently, Dr. Martincic has been a district judge for the Illinois Music
Educators Association (IMEA) for the last three years.
Dr. Martincic has received invitations to audition for many symphony
orchestras and opera houses including Boston, Chicago, Kansas City,
Minneapolis, St. Louis Symphony Orchestras and the Des Moines and
Chicago Lyric Operas. One of the most notable accomplishments was being
invited as one of 25 candidates worldwide to audition for the Principal
Trumpet position with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in fall 2004. He
also received invitations to audition for the United States Marine Band
"The President's Own" (Washington, D.C.) and The United States Navy
Ceremonial/Concert Band Assignment - The White House (Washington D.C.).
Dr. Martincic has studied classical music as well as jazz under many fine
trumpeters including: Niel Dunlap, Nick Drozdoff, Al Pearson, Bill Adam,
and Ron Modell. He also has had the unique opportunity to study jazz
arranging under international known composer/saxophonist Bobby
Watson at the university of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Jim’
s performance interests are wide in scope, including: classical, jazz, R&B
and contemporary music. He has shared the stage with artists including:
guitarist, Sharon Isbin; blues artists, Buddy Guy, Eddie King, Lonnie
Brooks; trumpeters, Rob Parton, Nick Drozzdoff, Dr. Edward Tarr, Marvin
Stamm, Mike Vax, Vincent DiMartino, “Doc” Severinsen, and Jon Faddis; jazz
artists, Harry Connick, Jr., Paquito D’Rivera and Mike Methany among
others. He has performed with Chicago ensembles such as: Brass Tracks
Jazz Orchestra, Rob Parton's Jazz Tech Big Band, Swing Shift, The Chicago
Grandstand Big Band, Royal Trumpet Works, Prairie Brass Band and
Illinois Brass Band.
Dr. Martincic also composes, records, and produces his own style of
contemporary jazz for The Creative Arts Ensemble and Level 7. He is a
recording artist for Lower Level Studio and Lion's Den Studio. He has also
taken an active interest in learning the art of design/production of
historical and modern brass instruments, with an emphasis on trumpets
since 1989. He spent 7 years as an apprentice to Ron Collier, formerly with
Schilke Music Products to further this knowledge and passion for trumpet
design and manufacturing.
